AHS 50-20 LI Cordless

February 7, 2020 by Brian

The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI is a fantastic hedge cutter that has some massive benefits over its corded rivals. When you look at the cutters capabilities and look at the price there is a fairly sizeable difference between the corded models and the cordless hedge trimmers. The extra money you spend will save you hours of time and make hedge trimming hassle free.

The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI Cordless Review

As well as the massive benefits from being cordless this model has some other great features that make it an all round great hedge trimmer. Built to deal with some wide hedges and cut through some of the bigger branches you will find in older hedges you will be amazed at what it can tackle. It is surprisingly light weight considering you are carrying around the battery as well, on top of the hedge trimmer itself.

Features

There are a lot of features to talk about on this model so let’s have a look if they are appropriate for what you are looking for.

The Blade

At 50 cm long the blade is capable of dealing with some medium depth hedges, there are models with longer blades on the market but this is long enough to get through some pretty thick growth. The tooth spacing is 20 mm allowing it to glide though some tough growth and small branches. Anything too thick for the standard blades can be dealt with using the sawing function.

Sawing Function

This a really handy feature that is not available on a lot of the cheaper models. It allows you to chop though branches up to 25mm thick. The saw is located at the front of the blade. If you hit a branch that is proving pretty hard to get through, just cut it with the front of the blade and you are away.

Again, this is a huge time saver, especially if you are cutting back old hedges. If you are on a step ladder and you have to stop and get down to get a saw or set of loppers every time you hit a large branch it is going to take a long time to get through a large hedge.

Cordless Power Supply

I have hedges all around my property and a garden that is one hundred feet long. This is by no means massive but with my old corded hedge trimmer I could spend as much time setting up and moving the extension lead as I would trimming the hedge.

With my cordless model it has significantly reduced the number of hours to keep the garden under control. It really is a huge benefit. It gives you a lot of the flexibility of the petrol models without all of the noise.

18 Volt Battery Pack

The battery that is supplied with this model is an 18 volt 2.5 ah Bosch battery. Run time on this will very much depend on how hard the cutter is working.

If you have a lot of hedges it may be worth investing in a second battery. Keep one charging while you are using the other. A spare battery will cost around £40, this is an additional cost you need to think about when comparing this to another model (such as a corded alternative where you don’t need batteries).

The Motor

The electric motor provides plenty of power to chop through some pretty tough branches and old hedge growth.

Anti-Blocking System

This helps stop the cutter getting stuck on tough areas of the hedge. If the blades hit a branch that can’t be cut through it changes the direction of the blades. Quite often I have had to battle to release the cutter from the middle of an old bit of growth which is time consuming and hard work.

Weight

Weighing in at around 2.5 kilograms it is surprisingly light considering that you are carrying the battery and the blades are not particularly small. Compared to some of the cheaper corded models this is lighter with more cutting capability. The AHS 45-16 is the same weight and has nowhere near the capability of this model.

Warranty

Bosch provide a 2 year manufacturers warranty on this model. This is backed by great Bosch customer service and service centres, one of the big benefits of having a warranty from a very large brand.

What The Customers Say

There are a lot of very happy customers out there that have saved a huge amount of time using cordless hedge trimmers. Moving away from the traditional corded models with all of their pitfalls. Have a look below at some of the comments from many happy Bosch AH 50-20 LI Cordless owners.

Don’t have to use secateurs anymore!

The sawing function has helped many people speed up the cutting process by limiting the use of secateurs, cutters and saws. Stopping and putting the cutter down can take take a lot of time especially if you are on a ladder, making this a big time saver.

Short Battery Life

There are a number of customers that would have liked a longer battery life. The issue with this is that bigger batteries weigh more. This problem is easily solved by buying a second battery. Many Bosch cordless tools all use the same batteries so it may well be worth sticking with Bosch for all of your cordless tools and build up a battery collection.

Conclusion

To give an overview of the Bosch AHS 50-20 LI Cordless hedge trimmer, it is a great all round package that addresses many problems with traditional hedge cutters. It is a real time saver compared to a corded model which in busy times can be a real asset. The design is brilliant which keeps it lightweight but with many great functions. Even though it is light it still has a fairly long blade.

In terms of price it is more expensive than standard electric models but still a lot cheaper than the well known petrol brands. It would be wise to factor in an extra battery if you have large hedges.

We highly recommend the Bosch AHS 50-20, it will make your life a lot easier when it comes to keeping the garden tidy.

AHS 45-16

December 19, 2019 by Brian

On this page we are going to have a look at the very practical Bosch AH45-16 hedge trimmer. This is a very popular great value cutter that is designed to make light work of smaller hedges around the home. Aimed at those that are looking to trim new growth off already tidy hedges and keep on top of the garden. If you live in a new build with just a few small hedges this is a great model.

The Bosch AHS 45-16 Review

When you look at some of the features the AH45-16 has to offer you may think they are not as good as some of the bigger models. But, it has been specifically designed to be easily stored and easy to use for light cutting. Many of the longer blade models are cumbersome and hard to store in the garden shed. Not all of us have large garages to store endless tools.

The other massive benefit is the weight of this model, making it easy to use without too much physical exertion. The soft grip handles make it a very pleasant experience to tidy up your garden.

Features

Now we are going to have a look at some of the key Bosch AH45-16 features. Although not packed with tons of features, this helps to make it a compact and easy to use hedge trimmer.

The Blade

The blade on this model is short which is not great for bigger hedges but is perfect for trimming new growth off small hedges. The short blade helps to keep the weight down and makes it very easy to store. The distance between the teeth is 16mm which is ample for regular trimming, if you do come across any old thick growth you may need a saw or loppers to cut through it.

There is no sawing function on this blade. However, it is not really designed to cut old thick hedges. For that sort of work you are going to need something more robust with a bigger blade, motor and sawing function.

The 420 Watt Motor

The motor is not the biggest but is well powered for this length of blade and the lighter hedge trimming it is designed for. A powerful motor is not all about how thick the hedges are it cuts, it will also make the the machine last longer. 420 watts is more than powerful enough for this cutter. There are a few models that have similar power motors with the same length blade like the Flymo Easicut 460.

Safety Features

The design of the body means the handles are easy to grip making it easy to move around in a smooth motion. There is a guard in front of your hands to stop any materials kicking back and hitting your hands while in use. When it is not is use a blade cover is supplied which will stop you catching anything on the blades when it is stored.

Power Supply

The power for this motor is delivered through a cord that is connected to the mains, or in most cases an extension lead. This not that ideal but with the AH45-16 you are more then likely going to be cutting a smaller hedges in which case it will not be too much of a pain.

Weight

This is one of the big benefits of this model. It weighs 2.5 kilograms which is very light for a hedge trimmer. For many of us that are not used to physical labour the weight of the cutter will be a big factor in our purchase decision. The AH45-16 will allow you to cut a lot of hedges with relative ease.

Some of the large heavier hedge cutters can weigh almost four times the weight of this model. The weight is generally due to a larger motor and longer blades. It is a compromise but if you are concerned about the physical aspect of cutting the hedge then this could be a good model for you.

Warranty

Even thought this is a relatively cheap hedge trimmer it is good to know that there is a warranty to back it up should anything go wrong. The standard two year warranty is supplied with the AH45-16, this can easily be extended to three years by registering your model with Bosch on their website.

What The Customers Say

So now you have heard what we have to say about this model. We are going to have a look at some of the Bosch AH45-16 customer feedback and some of the common themes that are brought up on the various websites that sell this model.

The blades are a bit short

A number of people have complained that the blades are too short on this model. One thing that we point out a lot on this site is that you need to look at the jobs you want to tackle before buying a hedge trimmer. Measure you’re hedges and look at the type of growth you want to trim. This is designed for lighter trimming not thick old hedges. There are much bigger cutters on the market for this sort of job.

Beware of the power cable

A few people including myself have cut the power cable by accident. This is a big downside of all cable powered hedge trimmers not just this model. If this is a problem you can have someone behind you holding the cable or go for a similar cordless or petrol model. They are a lot more expensive though!

Doesn’t cut branches

Again, as above this is not designed to cut branches and thick hedges. This is for light trimming a few times a year. Ideal to quickly get out of the garage, plug in and tidy the hedge up. If you do hit some thicker branches a saw will always help.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this is a great hedge trimmer if you are using it for what it was designed for. For easy tidying of hedges and light trimming work you will be very pleased and it won’t cost a fortune.

If you are buying this to save money but have some large old hedges to cut back with thick growth you will be very disappointed. This is a great hedge trimmer with very good reviews but look at the job you intend to use it for before you buy.

AHS 70-34

December 6, 2019 by Brian

Let’s have a look at the Bosch AHS 70-34, a powerful electric hedge cutter designed to tackle big hedges.

This is one of our favourite models, thanks to the trusted name carried by Bosch tools, competitive pricing and the impressive performance on offer. While different people will need different features, you’ll learn below why this is such a great all rounder, and why it might be exactly what you need to keep your hedges in the garden neat and tidy.

The Bosch AHS 70-34 Review

Many of the electric hedge cutters are under powered with a short blade, this model is built with larger hedges in mind. The combination of a powerful motor and long blade give it great performance. It is at the upper end of cost for a corded electric hedge cutter as it is very high powered. This might be a good model to consider if you are looking at petrol hedge cutters but don’t want the added weight or cost.

Features

The Bosch AHS 70-34 features offer a lot for the money, below we have more in depth look at them. For your money you are getting a powerful cutter that is able to cut some pretty large hedges.

The Blade

This model has a long blade which is perfect for larger hedges. The 70cm long laser cut blade will allow you to cut through large parts of the hedge with one sweep which will significantly cut down the trimming time compared to some of the smaller models. The blade is diamond ground for great cutting performance leaving your hedge with a nice finish.

The tooth opening is 34mm, this is a really wide opening and means you will be able to cut through some thick branches using the normal function of this model. There are not a great deal of other models with a tooth opening this wide which makes it ideal for old well established hedges.

Sawing Function

This is a great feature that is not available on all trimmers. The blade and the tooth gap is already wide but if you find an even thicker branch you can’t get through there is a sawing function that will cut through branches up to 34mm thick. That is quite a thick branch in a normal hedge.

The 700 Watt Motor

A blade of this size requires plenty of power to cut through dense hedge rows. The 700 watt motor is more then powerful enough to power this cutter. Some of the smaller electric motors can burn out when working on larger hedges.

Safety Features

To ensure that you have a good grip on while cutting Bosch have designed comfortable ergonomic handles. Really important when you are cutting for a long time and will make the work feel a lot easier. Your hands are situated behind a hand guard to protect you while you are cutting.

Power Supply

The Bosch AHS 70-34 electric hedge cutter is powered from a cord that is plugged into the mains. This is not really ideal on a larger hedge cutter as you will need an extension lead. You will also have to be very careful not to cut through the cable when you are trying to get through the bigger hedges. Often if you are moving about a lot it is easier to have another person holding the cable behind you. This is definitely a downside of this model compared to cordless alternatives.

Weight

The AHS 70-34 weighs in at 3.9 kilograms which is not particularly heavy for a hedge cutter of this size. It does weigh a bit more than some of the smaller models, this is because of the blade length and motor. If you compare this to a petrol hedge cutter it is very light.

Warranty

As standard this model comes with a 2 year Bosch manufacturers warranty. You will need to register the product with Bosch online once you have bought it and then you are covered. Bosch have an extensive service and spare parts coverage in the UK giving you peace of mind.

What The Customers Say

This customer feedback for the Bosch AHS 70-34 is very good and it has earned some fantastic reviews on the various websites that stock it. Below we will look at some of the common themes in the comments.

Cuts Deep Into The Hedges

Many customers have upgraded to this model from an older electric model. Many have been very impressed at how deep into the hedge this model cuts with its long blades compared to other models.

Quite Heavy

One downside that comes through in the feedback is that this is very heavy and can take its toll on your arms after a while. This is designed to tackle larger hedges and for that you are going to need a bigger motor and longer blade.

Smooth Cutting

The high torque 700 watt motor glides through old hedges according to some where other models have really struggled. Old privet hedges and chunky deciduous hedges are no problem for the AHS 70-34 at all.

Conclusion

In conclusion we think this is a really good hedge cutter. It is very good value for money when you look at the feature set and the cutting capacity compared to a lot of other models. It’s a good rival for some of the petrol cutters but a good bit cheaper than a lot of them.

On the down side it does have an electric cable that has to be dealt with when you are cutting. The cordless electric models are more practical but they don’t have the power of this one. If you have a lot of hedges to trim and don’t want a petrol powered cutter, then this is a good model to look at. If you are looking for an electric hedge trimmer to trim some small hedges once in a while it may be a bit too much for the job.
